The Cheneys are at each other’s throats concerning the standing
of one another on gay marriage.
Same sex marriage is a hot topic in the media these days. Opinions
concerning who should be allowed and who should not be allowed to marry get the
blood of so many individuals boiling. The story explains how one daughter of
the Cheney family believes that the rights of gay Americans to wed should be
decided on a state to state basis. It is her belief that judges and legislators
should remain outside of the decision all together. The other sister, an openly
gay and married individual, used her facebook page to take a stand against her
sister. She believes that a right to marry the one you love should not be
decided based off of what the people, or majority, may want.

So, what do you think? I do not wish to start an argument
among my peers, but I would like to know how you feel as individuals. I,
personally, do not discuss the subject with anyone but my husband. I find
myself uncomfortable with discussing the idea openly because I was raised in
church, and I know I am supposed to believe one way, but I find myself hoping
that a solution can be found for this argument. For me, marriage is a symbol of
the church. It says it in my bible. For some, marriage is simply a technicality
separate from the church because it is a union that is recognized under the law
of man. Should the government have say over who weds and who does not? Is there
a compromise? Could there be a way for gays to wed that would not offend the
church, a ceremony that takes place under the law of the land? So, tell me what
you feel would bring about a solution? Feel free to express yourself openly,
but do remember to be respectful of each other’s opinions because we are all
people, and all we need is love for one another.
I was, too, brought up in the church but there are different types of church goers and everyone believes in their own way. There are many church going individuals and churches that are more on the radical side of how to view the bible. When I say that I mean no tattoos, no cursing, no provocative clothing, no sex till marriage, no abortion, etc. In today's society I find that it is your decision of who you love and your relationship with God will not suffer because of that decision. As for if the government should be involved in the issue of same sex marriage I believe that over time each state will eventually approve this right and the government will ultimately be uninvolved in the matter. I understand that the gay community is upset with not having the right to marry whom they want but I know, looking at the history of womens rights and black rights, that these things take time.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see where you are coming from, and maybe one day there will be a solution to the issue. It is a challenging issue for our government because the issue is derived from a christian frame of mind, and we are supposed to be a country that separates church and state. However, don't you feel that the government will have to maintain involvement due to the benefits of marriage, the violence that could become present due to gay marriage approval, or any other issue dealing with gay marriage? Look at Roe v Wade, we are still arguing about this today. There are violent outbursts due to the approval of abortions. What could we do as a people to simply accept certain situations without going, for lack of a better word, crazy? Marriages are only legal if a marriage certificate is applied for, signed , and approved by the state. It means nothing if you simply find a minister and have him go over the vows with you, at least to the government. Maybe there could be a way for people to compromise by taking the church aspect out of some marriage situations. I believe that it is clear that the issue will live on forever, even if it does earn governmental approval. America, being the melting pot that she is, has so many different kinds of people and ideologies, and this is what makes a hot topic, like this one so important, because the question becomes: Who do we represent first? Whose belief system wins out overall?
